Back in July last year, I posted ‘Dear Reader, you always have an adventure or two in you’, and then I ran out of pencils and went on an adventure of my own, a kind of inner adventure, finding what I needed to finish a new book.
And I did it, on December 28, and one way or another The Healer will be out in May.
Then I created a new magic show, Vegas Or Bust, which will end up with me in Las Vegas, trying to get a gig on the Strip, and find an idea for a new book, which I’m pretty sure is hiding out there. Heck knows why, but Vegas has always been my creative heartland.
So with the book done, and the magic show beginning in April, I set about finding new pencils.
For a long time I’ve written with Blackwing 602 pencils, the best in the world, by a long chalk, my favourite, and I love them, which pretty much rules them out. I can’t bear to have a favourite thing, or find myself loving a thing, it’s the road to certain doom. Love is for people, not stuff.
Luckily I found a stash of 87 pencils, unknowingly stolen from a school, and I have no feelings about them at all, so they are perfect. I picked one out, sharpened it, and wrote myself some messages, sort of from my illusionary spirit guide, for 2026:

Love Matters Most - Nicole told you this all those years ago, when you were picking grapes and living in a derelict house in Pez, on Crete, it was the reason you met her. Love what you do, love the people you meet, keep learning to love yourself.
Deal With It - this was from Sam, when he was a beautiful little boy, remember, he hugged you and whispered it in your ear, and although he’s not here now, he whispers it still, and more besides. Deal with whatever comes your way, whatever stands in your way, however hard it is you have it in you to sort it out. Whatever the problem, you will always find a solution.
Look For The Good - always, like you always have, since you were small, look for it even if no one else is, this is your superpower.
Fire - no one else knows what you want, but you do. No one else knows what makes you happy, but you do. No one else knows what you really want to do, but you sure do. You must always light your own fire.
You Are A Magician - you can make anything happen!
