Desk Life

Mostly, in my life as a trainer, a speaker, a magician, and sometime coach, and for most of the work phone calls I make, I’m standing, and I’ve never had much of a desk life. I always figure I stand a better chance on my feet.

But as a writer I have a desk, and a recent habit of tidying it when I’m done for the day. In practice, I stack everything I’ve been working on in a somewhat neat pile.

My ROCK is always there, although it has no obvious use. My friend Eliso, 4 years old at the time, and I were painting rocks from the beach, and I told him mine was a mysterious black rock that had within it an infinite source of golden light, and offered it to him as a gift of great treasure, but I think that was all a bit much for him, and he declined, saying his was better, and it probably was, and told me to keep mine, so I have. Anyone out there want it?

There’s pretty much always a PENCIL, a Blackwing 602, and I write everything with it before I even open the laptop. The SHARPIE is just along for the ride.

The COASTER with donkeys on it is new enough that I usually forget to put my coffee cup, currently a miniature tin mug, on it, but I like having it there. It’s only the second coaster I’ve ever had, both gifts from a friend who visits a donkey sanctuary, and I lost the first one, it barely made it home, so I’m trying to keep my eye on this one.

The JERRY’S NUGGET deck is there because I’m working on something for my show, a thing with jokers from old casinos, and the ‘moves’ are a bit of a knack, so I have the cards in my hands a lot, practicing, and it feels like a kind of meditation.

I wrote, in last week’s blog, about using a secret scroll of flash paper, an ending I’ve had for years, and someone asked the brilliant question ‘Why?’, and it shook me up just the way it should, and I came up with a better way. It involves everyone at the gig, a mini life-changing moment, a WTF moment of magic, and so I need a self lighting BOOK OF MATCHES.

The PENKNIFE is to sharpen the pencil, the SEASHELL is a treasure from the beach that seems to keep appearing wherever I am, and there’s always a garish RING, and there’s always CIGARETTES.

I left a note with the HORSESHOE, as a lucky house warming gift, for a deeply loved one of my own blood, and she found the note, but left the gift, so, maybe, like the rock, I have to keep it. The RUBBER BANDS are mostly silicone, much better, stretchier, more durable, but I’m not quite sure how or why they made it to my desk.

Everything is piled on a ‘scamp’ of the cover for THE HEALER, my new book, and I’m so nearly there, so almost done, just a little bit of typing to do, and one big leap in the dark to go.

The missing item is my NOTEBOOK, somewhere between A4 and A5, unlined, with a pocket at the back, my 8th of the year so far, and that’s ever present with me, because I’m sure I write better away from my desk, somewhere away from home, ideally Las Vegas, my creative home, but definitely somewhere distant.

What’s on your desk, DEAR READER, or at least what’s the best thing?
